All about RunCloud, Forge and ServerPilot
Whether you like it or not, but he cloud is taking over the IT. The indication is loud and clear, cloud computing is taking over in-house IT at present. This is what will dominate the future as well. What powers the cloud? It is Linux. In fact a recent survey of about 1000 IT executives revealed that 50 percent of senior enterprise IT executives expect that the bulk of their IT Workloads too be in the off premises or in the cloud or colocation sites in the future. What is even more striking about this survey is that of those who were surveyed, 23 % expect the shift to happen by next year, where as much as 70 % expect that shift to occur within the next 4 years. This comes as no surprise. However in spite of this as many of us still love our physical servers and racks; but it hardly makes any financial sense to run your own data center. Why it makes sense to shift to cloud computing? It is really just simple. If compare your compare the capital cost involved in maintaining your own hardware against the operational costs of using a cloud. However that does not mean you outsource, but most of the time and for many of your jobs you would want to move to the cloud. But at the same time you must realize that to make the best use of the cloud, you must also know Linux. In fact Amazon Web Services, Apache CloudStack, Google Cloud Platforms are all which run on Linux. This is why the Linux Server application deployments has risen significantly at present. In fact it’s being seen that Linux's penetration into the proprietary server room is even deeper than it first appears. The trends are clear that cloud based platforms will rule the future for sure. “Forge” in simple terms According to Wikipedia a “forge” as popularly known is a web-based collaborative software platform. It is meant for both developing as well sharing computer applications. You should know that a forge platform is usually able to host multiple independent projects. For software and web developers it is a place to host, among others, source code (often version-controlled), bug database and documentation for their projects. For users, on the other hand a forge is a repository of computer applications. This new technology has gained much popularity in recent times, and has proven to be successful as a software development model for many types of software projects. Basics of ServerPilot How it works? ServerPilot is in simple terms a cloud service. It is mainly used for hosting WordPress and other PHP websites on servers at DigitalOcean, Linode, Rackspace, or could be anywhere else too. You could consider it as a modern, centralized hosting control panel. You must take note that ServerPilot does not provide servers. Instead, they make it easy to host PHP sites on your own servers. These servers could be cloud servers, VPSes, or dedicated servers at any provider. How to use it? Once you have created your ServerPilot account, your first step would be able to connect a server to ServerPilot. You will start with a completely fresh Ubuntu server. If you have already installed Apache, Nginx, PHP, or MySQL, then you would not be able to connect your server to ServerPilot. On completion of a simple and secure form, the ServerPilot agent is installed on your server. The agent keeps a secure connection open to ServerPilot, does the actual management of your server. It also sends back stats and logs. You would then use ServerPilot to create a new app for each website you want to host on your server. For each app you have to create, ServerPilot that would handle all of the server reconfiguration. You need not do any configuration of Nginx, Apache, MySQL, or PHP. In fact you can just use the built-in WordPress installer or SSH/SFTP to upload your site's files to your server. What ServerPilot Does?
